Compressed Air is used throughout industry in almost every sector of the economy. It may be regarded as a basic resource in many industries and its generation accounts for over 10% of the industrial electricity consumed in the UK.

Many of the industrial companies who daily generate and use compressed air in their business processes fail to realise the true cost of what has been termed, 'the phantom utility'. It is natural for people to think that compressed air is a free resource, however, this premise forgets that a considerable amount of energy is used to compress the air to the higher pressure required for distribution and use in the process.

In a 10 year period, it has been estimated that 75% of the life cycle cost of a compressed air system is the actual energy consumed. Inefficient air generation, purification, condensate removal, air distribution, leakage and waste can all have a significant effect on the bottom line.

In any organisation, it is important that there is an appreciation of the various factors which can lead inefficient production and usage of compressed air and that the true costs are revealed to the stake holders in the business.
