Scope of Supply

Safewell installed a process compressed air quality measurement station at the Becton Dickinson (BD) pharmaceutical plant in Swindon. Becton Dickinson is a US head quartered international leader in the development of innovative technologies, services, and solutions to improve safety and efficiency in healthcare.

We partnered with client Schneider Electric to deliver this product and provide the client with a sound solution for their continuous onsite monitoring.

Functional Requirements

To prevent risk to product quality, human health, and corporate reputation, it is important when using Compressed Air in safety critical processes such as Pharmaceutical manufacture that the quality of the compressed air used in the process is validated in accordance with the required quality class as defined in the International ISO 8573-1:2010 standard. The client understood this risk and confirmed they wanted to achieve quality class 2,3,0.

The Challenge

The project objective was to reduce the risk of poor quality compressed air contaminating the manufacturing process and included the supply, installation, and commissioning of an on-line compressed air quality measurement station to continuously monitor the quality of the site process compressed air system, checking compliance against the desired ISO8573-1 quality class 2,3,0 and provide alerts if the measured compressed air quality deviates from the target.

The client also asked Safewell to support with the integration of the monitoring data to be made available to the Automation & Energy Management System BAS/BEMS provided by Schneider Electric via a Modbus TCP ethernet link. Safewell worked with both Schneider Electric and the BD team to  ensure this integration was performed seamlessly with minimal disruption.

Results

In early July 2023, Safewell installed and commissioned the Compressed Air Measurement Station onsite at the Becton Dickinson (BD) pharmaceutical plant in Swindon. Both Safewell and partners Schneider Electric were onsite supporting this process and it was completed as planned within the budgeted time.

Now the client has a continuous monitoring station connected to their data system which provides them with real time insights to their compressed air quality.

Safewell provided a fantastic turnkey solution for a
compressed air quality installation for a validated
system. The sensor is of good quality and the team
had all the IP and Modbus parameters pre
programmed to make the job a lot smoother onsite.
The engineer was able to install, commission and
demo the sensor very efficiently. The whole team
worked hard to provide a professional service for us
and the end user" - Ieuan Webb (Project Manager
for Schneider Electric)
