Client challenge
The client has the objective of no injuries and no detrimental effect to the environment. This is communicated throughout its business via its ‘CapeSafe’ brand which emphasises the level of safety performance required to protect the long term health and well being of its employees. Altrad has now acquired Cape in a £332m takeover (Financial Times, 2017).
When undertaking client fabric maintenance workscopes, the client has to provide a mask-fed clean, safe breathing air supply for use by its operatives working in hazardous areas where the ambient air is not safe to breathe. The breathing air supply is generated by compressors and the process of air compression can introduce additional invisible hazards which must be managed safely at all times to prevent both short term and long term health risks to the employees.
The client not only needed to comply with the European breathing air quality standard EN12021:2014 and UK HSE COSHH, but also needed to ensure that its offshore operatives were trained and competent to manage the risk and carry out breathing air purity tests offshore to prove that they were consistently providing its employees with a safe breathing air supply containing the lowest possible level of contaminants. This allowed them to manage the risk in a manner that was ‘as low as reasonably practicable’ (ALARP).

The Safewell Team worked with the client in a discovery phase to understand its business operations and objectives and develop a Training and Competence Assurance Course for its offshore operatives. The course was designed to create an awareness of risk, legislation, standards and best practice and also to develop practical competence of employees tasked with validation of breathing air quality on both offshore and onshore oil and gas and industrial workscopes. The value clarity of the Safewell integrated holistic safety solution led to the client standardising the Safewell Training and Competence Assurance Course throughout its UK and International business operations.
The Safewell Team engaged with the client’s senior operational and workshop teams to gain information regarding the range of tasks and working environments its employees faced during their workscopes to clarify the challenges and difficulties they have encountered in the past.

Using this discovery process and Safewell’s extensive knowledge of the legal safety regulations and breathing air quality standards, we helped the client develop a safe and cost effective life cycle risk management solution for integration as part of its ‘CapeSafe’ management initiative.

To date Safewell has provided training and competence assurance for over 200 ALTRAD / Cape employees. As the business developed, creating awareness of risk and best practice, the client also adopted Safewell products throughout its business including the ALG10-2 breathing air purification units and Air Purity Analysers for testing the quality of the breathing air quickly and effectively. The client has reduced the risk of work related respiratory illnesses from its employees protecting their long-term health.
