Client Challenge

The client contacted Safewell to enquire about its range of ATEX breathing air compressors for use in the potentially explosive atmospheres typically present during fabric maintenance operations on petrol forecourts. ‘Safewell were asked to propose a more integrated mobile solution’

They explained that they currently used diesel compressors combined with separate filter packs and cylinder trolleys to generate a compressed breathing air supply for operatives working in the hazardous areas. The operational director felt that the deployment of several items of equipment (all of which had to be installed and piped together on site) to allow generation of breathing air was not the safest and most efficient way to achieve the objective.

Safewell was asked to propose a more integrated mobile solution. The Safewell Team worked with the client in a discovery phase to understand their business operations and objectives in detail with the aim to develop a fully integrated solution.

The client wanted to retain the use of diesel compressors as the availability of electrical power was not guaranteed at the fuel forecourt. This ruled out the use of the Safewell ATEX Electric Breathing Air Compressor however the development of a new fully pneumatic mobile unit based on many of the non-electrical proven design features present in the Safewell ATEX Breathing Air Compressor was considered. Following several meetings with the client’s senior operational management, to discuss and agree the safety and operational objectives a solution was proposed.

Innovate and collaborate

Based on the design offered, the client contracted Safewell to manufacture a number of mobile ATEX Breathing Air Units to provide compressed breathing air for up to four operatives simultaneously conducting fabric maintenance operations on petrol forecourts.

The agreed breathing air quality standard was EN12021:2014. The fully pneumatic wheeled mobile unit consists of a pneumatically driven after-cooler combined with the proven Safewell SafeAir breathing purification system with back up cylinders to provide a back-up air supply and a pneumatic alarm to alert the operatives if the diesel compressor shuts down suddenly. First units were delivered to the client in summer 2017 and early feedback is positive and the anticipated value of the solution is now being realised.
