How does the CO2 monitor work?

What is the risk?

To reduce the risk of COVID-19 and other airborne microbial disease transmission in indoor environments, the World Health Organisation and many other independent government bodies, scientists and engineers recommend improved ventilation of indoor spaces.

The latest research confirms that infection by aerosols is a key transmission route for contagion by COVID-19 e.g. when you breathe in the invisible infectious particles that a sick person exhales and that behave like smoke when they leave their mouth.

Such Aerosol sprays / droplets are particles smaller than 100 microns in diameter and without adequate ventilation they can remain suspended in the air for hours and condense on surfaces in the room as time passes. There is clear evidence that this route of infection can occur despite the 2-meter distancing guidance so any person walking into a space recently occupied by a contaminated person will be subject to increased risk.

What can we do to help?

Detailed risk analysis has been conducted on the control measures which can be adopted and in addition to the wearing of masks, social distancing and good hygiene improved ventilation of indoor spaces significantly reduces the risk of aerosol infection.

One way to measure whether an indoor space is adequately ventilated is to measure the carbon dioxide level. When an indoor space is occupied by people such as school classrooms, meeting room, waiting room, office, everyone in the space exhales carbon dioxide when breathing so the level of CO2 will rise and the level can be measured and
logged.

The data can then be used to analyse and improve ventilation in the space e.g. opening a window or vent or activating a ventilation system.

How does it work?

The latest scientific advice is that an upper limit of 1000 parts per million CO2 should be used to prioritise multioccupancy, frequently used areas for improvement. For example, in schools where groups of children are involved in physical activity or singing the risk increases significantly. A target of 600 parts per million is suggested to confirm that an indoor space is adequately ventilated.

Real time measurement of CO2 as a way of verifying adequate ventilation in a space is a logical choice. The fact that we can implement this very quickly and easily making the data available on the cloud within minutes allows the currently invisible risk to be made visible as part of the client discovery process.
