Clean air? Take care!

Safe breathing air

Safewell is aligned with the Clean Air? - Take Care! campaign. This is a new joint initiative between the BSIF and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) aimed at reducing occupational respiratory disease.

The initiative is centred on a range of national activities and educational seminars designed to raise awareness among Respiratory Protection Equipment RPE users, employers, fit testers and advisors on the correct selection, deployment, use, maintenance and storage of RPE.

During work tasks where the ambient air quality is too hazardous for breathing, compressed air is used for respiratory protection by operatives working in a large number of industrial sectors including oil and gas, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, nuclear, diving and in medical applications. The use of clean compressed air is to provide the user with a safe breathing air supply when working but compressed air can also become contaminated during the process of compression.

Safe & reliable

Always beyond the standards

The quality of the compressed air and gas used for respiratory protection is regulated by International Standards such as BS EN 12021:2014, 'Respiratory Equipment - Compressed Gases for Breathing Apparatus.'

Compression of ambient air using a compressor concentrates the contamination already present in the ambient air and also introduces other contaminants such as oil vapours, condensed water, bacteria and other toxic gases.

In organisations using compressed air to provide respiratory protection for their staff, effective lifecycle management of these risks is critical for the both the immediate and long term health and safety of the people concerned.

It is vitally important that such organisations fully understand the risks and implement a holistic approach to mitigate these including carrying out risk assessments, training of operatives, generating safe systematic procedures, provision of effective air purification barriers, and supplying calibrated air quality testing equipment to monitor the breathing air quality.

It should also be noted that effective management of the risk is a life cycle obligation and the maintenance, testing and calibration of equipment used to manage a holistic safety strategy is critical to the long term safety of the people involved. Safewell work closely with clients to help them manage the long terms health and safety of their staff providing training, equipment, life -cycle maintenance and management support.
